The dog

However, the tradition of sledge dog use in Greenland is threatened. During the last two decades, the number of indigenous dogs has declined rapidly from 31,000 to less than 15,000 and the trend continues as the snow mobile has gained ground. The decline has been accelerated by the recent elevated temperatures in the Arctic, that reduce the number of days with sea ice and hence the time the dogs can be used. If these trends continue, the sledge dog may cease to be bred and maintained, ultimately leading to its extinction.
